Engaging in Career-Long Learning

During spring for 2020, I lost my part-time job due to the increasing numbers and restrictions from Covid-19. Although it was disappointing news, I took it as an opportunity to seek out new knowledge through research. Therefore, I signed up to take a course that focused around trauma to understand what it looked like, how it can happen, and how to help students that experience it. This was an important learning experience for me because I only had surface level understanding and I wanted to improve my capacity to care and welcome them better.

This was a good chance for me to build a “capacity to support student success in inclusive, welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe environments” (Alberta Education, 2018, p. 4). Furthermore, I wanted to improve my practice, not only for my upcoming Field experiences, but for my future teaching experiences too. Through researching more about trauma-informed practices, I believe I am improving my practice because I am becoming more aware of what students can go through.
